Astrophotography, Aurora Guiding & Night Sky Education

Andy Keen
Andy Keen is a professional astrophotographer, educator, and aurora guide with over 16 years of experience working beneath Arctic skies.
In that time he has spent more than 10,000 hours in the field, guiding thousands of participants from around the world in search of the Northern Lights — with a documented aurora success rate of approximately 95% since 2008. That figure is not a marketing claim. It is the result of knowing where to go, when to go, and what to do when conditions shift.
His work has been published internationally in The Guardian, Sky & Telescope, Wanderlust, Daily Mail, and American Express Travel.
"Andy is warm, approachable, and full of enthusiasm for life and the natural world. He loves what he does, and it shows."
— BBC Film Director, Little StargazingAndy has contributed to television and documentary productions for the BBC, Spiegel TV, and productions supported by French and Belgian broadcasters. The BBC programme Little Stargazing, for which Andy served as on-screen guide, was nominated for a BAFTA. The Spiegel TV documentary Die Sonne — broadcast on ARTE and Curiosity Stream — was nominated at the Silbersalz Science & Media Festival and went on to win the Medienpreis Luft- und Raumfahrt in the Space category.
Television & Documentary Work
Andy's expertise has brought him in front of the camera as well as behind it — contributing to internationally broadcast productions that have reached audiences across Europe, the United States, and beyond.
What Keen Astro Offers
Keen Astro is built around one idea: that meaningful experiences under the night sky don't happen by accident. They happen through preparation, knowledge, and being in the right place at the right time.
In-person astrophotography workshops cover both landscape astrophotography and deep sky imaging — structured for complete beginners, and designed to build real, lasting skills rather than just producing a single night's images. Sessions are small and personal, with a maximum of two participants for deep sky and in-person image processing work.
Northern Lights guiding is local ground support — not a package tour. Andy works with clients in the field, reading conditions, finding locations, and organising complementary Arctic experiences alongside the aurora chase itself.
Image processing is covered both through in-person sessions and through the free Learning Zone — an expanding library of articles and guides covering the full journey from capture to final output. A premium subscriber section may be introduced in time, but the core resource will remain freely accessible.
Keen Astro also works with schools — delivering educational seminars, organising night sky events, and helping to establish astronomy clubs. It is a service Andy takes seriously, because getting young people to look up is, in many ways, where everything begins.
Special expeditions — such as the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse in Spain — are arranged for those who want to witness major celestial events properly, in the right location, with the right preparation.

Base of Operations
Alongside Arctic expeditions, Andy operates from a Mediterranean base on the island of Gozo — delivering landscape astrophotography workshops, deep sky imaging sessions, and astro-landscape experiences across southern Europe.
These southern European projects explore the relationship between dark skies, landscape, geology, and history — forming the foundation for an expanding programme of workshops and expeditions.
A Note on Background
Earlier in his career, Andy founded and led The Neuropathy Trust, a UK charity supporting people living with chronic nerve pain, raising more than £2 million during his tenure. It is a different chapter, but one that reflects the same instinct: to build something useful, and to do it properly.
This is a small operation. Every enquiry is handled personally. If you have a question — or something in mind that isn't listed — just get in touch.
