📍 FocusReal aurora locations

Planning a Northern Lights trip sounds simple. In reality, it rarely is.

Most people choose a destination, book somewhere to stay, and hope for clear skies.

Sometimes it works. Often it doesn’t.

This session is about getting it right the first time.

Why this matters

A Northern Lights trip is not cheap. Flights, hotels and time all add up quickly.

Get it wrong, and you can spend a lot of money and see nothing.

Get it right, and it becomes something you never forget.

Careful planning can save money and massively improve your chances.

Why most trips fall short

Many people book through large travel companies or packaged tours.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but these trips are often built around convenience, logistics and marketing, rather than the best possible viewing conditions.

Popular destinations tend to be busy, heavily promoted, and not always the strongest locations for actually seeing the aurora.

That means more people, more light, less flexibility, and fewer real options when conditions change.

It is entirely possible to travel a long way and still end up in the wrong place.

Local guides, especially experienced nature and aurora guides, can be extremely valuable. In more difficult winter conditions, they can make a real difference.

But many people don’t realise that with the right planning, it is entirely possible to do this independently.

A different approach

The locations I recommend are not chosen because they are popular.

They are chosen because they work.

Lower population, darker skies, quieter roads, and better access to open landscapes all make a significant difference.

These are places where you are often more likely to encounter wildlife than other people.

The goal is simple. Put you in the right place, under the right conditions.

About me

I have spent more than 16 years under Arctic skies, with over 10,000 hours observing and photographing the aurora.

I have helped thousands of people experience it, with a success rate of around 95 percent.

My work has been featured in the BBC, The Guardian, Sky & Telescope and more.

This is practical experience gained in the field, not theory.

BBC testimonial

“We chose Andy because of his experience and local knowledge of the Northern Lights.

It was one of the best filming experiences I’ve had and the programme went on to be nominated for a BAFTA.

Andy is warm, approachable and has a genuine enthusiasm for the natural world.”
